Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India and Ms. Amrit Raj, IPoS, Development Commissioner for Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, visited the Special Handloom & Handicraft Expo exhibition cum sale of the exquisite Handloom & Handicraft products at the 42 nd India International Trade Fair,   Hall No 6 Ground Floor Pragati Maidan,New Delhi on 14th November 2023.

They visited the various stalls and interacted with the talented weavers and artisans and encouraged them.  Special Handloom & Handicraft Expo exhibition cum sale is an initiative of the office of Development Commissioner for Handlooms & Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India to ensure direct access for the handloom weavers to market their products to consumers directly in various cities of India.

The participants are from various State Government Bodies/ Apex Societies, Primary Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies and Handloom and Handicraft Agencies. 200 agencies belonging to 28 states and 8 Union Territories are participating in the exhibition.

The handloom sector of India employs more than 65 lac people directly or indirectly, which is next only to the agricultural sector of the country. The art of handloom weaving has traditional values attached to it and each region has exquisite varieties of it.  The uniqueness of handloom silk products such as Pochampalli, Paithani, Kanjivaram, Banarasi, Jamdani, Baluchari, and Ikkat, to name a few, attracts customers across the globe.

These traditional silk products offer exclusive weaves, designs and traditional motifs.  Through these exhibitions, handloom agencies not only market their products at reasonable rates but also get to know the customers’ choice with regard to colour, design and weaving for future improvement of the product.

All the exhibitors at the Special Handloom & Handicraft Expo exhibition cum sale have been encouraged to display the ‘Handloom Mark’ and ‘Silk Mark’ tags on the products with the objective to improve the earnings of the handloom weaver community.

This exhibition –cum sale started on 14th  November and will continue till   27th  November 2023  at the 42nd India International Trade Fair,  Hall No 6, Ground Floor Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
