Delhi, September 30, 2024 – Today, hundreds of RPI workers gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest and demand the immediate implementation of the Slum Protection Act in Delhi. The protest was aimed at saving 675 slum areas in the state, which house around 2000,000 people facing the risk of displacement. The protesters, led by prominent leaders, emphasized the urgency of safeguarding the homes and lives of slum dwellers, many of whom live in precarious conditions.
The event was graced by Dr. Rajeev Menon, National Secretary General of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), who served as the chief guest. He passionately addressed the crowd, urging the Delhi government to act swiftly to protect the vulnerable populations living in these slums.
“The people living in slums deserve security, dignity, and respect. Their homes cannot be taken away without offering them proper rehabilitation. We demand the immediate implementation of the Slum Protection Act to ensure their safety and well-being,” said Dr. Menon.
The protest was also attended by Fakre Alam, President of the Delhi Republican Party of India (Athawale), and Anil, Delhi Working President. Both leaders echoed the sentiment of urgency, calling on the government to fulfill its duty to protect the rights of the underprivileged.
Alam highlighted the plight of slum dwellers, many of whom face eviction threats without any alternative housing plans. “The people living in slums have contributed to the growth of this city. They cannot be forgotten or neglected. We stand united in our demand for justice,” Alam stated.
Manju Chibber, Lakshmi, and Sunil, prominent social workers, also addressed the gathering, advocating for the rights of the slum residents. They pointed out that the lack of government intervention puts thousands of families at risk, leaving them without homes or a secure future.
Around 600 people participated in the protest, carrying banners and chanting slogans in support of the cause. The crowd represented a wide range of Delhi residents, from slum dwellers to activists and concerned citizens. The protestors demanded that the Delhi government take immediate steps to safeguard slum communities from forced evictions, urging the implementation of the Slum Protection Act to provide legal security to these residents.
The protesters also expressed concerns about the growing inequalities in the city and called for more inclusive urban planning that considers the needs of the poor and marginalized.
As the protest concluded, Dr. Rajeev Menon called on the Delhi government to take immediate action to protect slum dwellers. “We cannot wait any longer. The lives of lakhs of people are at stake. The government must act now and ensure that no one is left homeless. Implementing the Slum Protection Act is the first step toward justice,” Dr. Menon reiterated.
The protest ended peacefully, with organizers pledging to continue their efforts until the government responds to their demands. Many of the protesters left with renewed hope, but also with a sense of determination to keep fighting for the rights of slum residents across Delhi.
