For patients living with psoriasis or vitiligo, the hardest part is rarely the diagnosis. It’s the years that follow, one prescription after another, some relief, then a relapse, then the search starting over again. Dr. JRK’s Research and Pharmaceuticals, a Chennai-based company that has spent more than three decades developing Siddha-based treatments for skin and autoimmune disorders, is betting that its Out-Patient Department can shorten that search for a lot more people than it currently reaches.
The company has begun widening the scope of its OPD campaign, an effort to bring the same consultation and treatment process that has shaped its research over the years to patients who, until now, may never have walked through its doors in Chennai.
It’s worth understanding what the OPD actually is before getting into what’s changing. It isn’t a marketing add-on. Most of the products have been clinically validated through CTRI-registered clinical trials, including one that reported an 87 percent improvement in PASI scores among psoriasis patients using the company’s topical protocol.
Psoriasis and vitiligo aren’t rare conditions, but they’re treated like inconvenient ones, chronic, slow to respond, and still carrying a fair amount of social stigma in India, particularly when they show up on visible skin. Patients often end up cycling through dermatologists, steroids, home remedies and whatever a relative swears worked for someone else, without ever landing on something consistent. “Patients dealing with chronic skin and autoimmune conditions often go from one treatment to another without lasting results. We wanted to create a space where they can access care that has actually been tested and refined over decades,” a company representative said, explaining why the OPD is being opened up more widely rather than staying an internal research tool.
What patients get through the campaign isn’t dramatically different from what the OPD has always offered, assessment, a treatment plan, and follow-up, except now the intent is for more of them to actually get there. The department’s practitioners work alongside the company’s R&D team, so patient outcomes don’t just stay in a file somewhere; they loop back into how the formulations get refined. That feedback cycle is part of why the company describes its product line as “evolving” rather than fixed.
There’s also a broader story here that goes beyond one company. Traditional medicine in India, Siddha and Ayurveda alike, has spent the last decade or so trying to shake off the assumption that it runs on tradition and testimonials rather than evidence. Institutions that can point to registered trials and published research have a real advantage in that shift, and JRK Research has leaned into that positioning fairly deliberately, treating its OPD less as a clinic and more as a live research site that happens to also treat patients.
For now, the campaign is limited to Chennai, while efforts are underway to expand consultation access for patients who cannot visit the city in person. Additional details will be shared as the initiative progresses.
What it has made available is a way in: patients or caregivers wanting to know more, or to book a consultation, can go to https://jrkresearch.com/ or call +91 8667653268.
Whether the campaign meaningfully changes access for patients outside Chennai is something that will likely become clearer over the next few months. What it does signal, at minimum, is a company trying to make a decades-old research process less closed off, and betting that patients tired of starting over will be the ones who notice.
