Rohith Guttamidhi, a gifted actor and filmmaker, left the vibrant city of Hyderabad, India, and embarked on a new chapter in the bustling landscape of New York in the autumn of 2021.
Armed with a prestigious degree from the Dadasaheb Phalke School of Film Studies in India, Rohith had already made his mark by collaborating with the esteemed Director C. Uma Maheshwara Rao on the critically acclaimed film “ITLU AMMA,” a project boasting a stellar cast including Revathi, Krishna Murali Posani, and Ravi Kale. Notably, he also worked on the short film “Breaking Out,” addressing the struggles of India’s queer community during a period when same-sex marriage remained outlawed.
He chose The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute as his next destination.
During his tenure at the Institute, Rohith showcased his artistic versatility. He wrote and took the lead in “Death of Anarkali,” a condensed play adapted from Imtaiz Ali Taj’s “Anarkali.”
Additionally, he assumed a central role in the short film “KSMS,” directed by Ulla Warźee, which gained official selection status at the 5th Annual Lee Strasberg Film Festival. Fate introduced him to two extraordinary individuals, Emely de Paiva and Ermete de Boni, who would become his creative accomplices. Together, they laid the foundation for “The Chekhovians,” a dynamic theater company.
Their debut venture, “An Afternoon with Anton,” brought two of Anton Chekhov’s comedic masterpieces, “The Anniversary” (in which Rohith starred and directed) and “A Swan Song,” to the stage. The premiere at The Player’s Theatre in New York drew acclaim in December. Bolstered by their success, they took their production to Italy, captivating European audiences and earning well-deserved standing ovations.
With these triumphs as their driving force, “The Chekhovians” are currently immersed in reimagining the classic play “The Cherry Orchard,” promising an enchanting approach that is bound to resonate with audiences.
Rohith’s exceptional talent has garnered recognition, particularly for his leading role in “Y?” written and directed by Frank E. Robinson. This captivating play has generated considerable buzz and is positioned to make waves on Broadway.
Amid his fervent pursuit of cinematic artistry, Rohith has engaged in various projects in recent months. Notable among these is “The Mountains We Left Behind,” a poignant film set in a picturesque mountain village. The narrative revolves around a protagonist yearning to escape the mundane and embrace the unknown beyond the mountains. Breathtaking landscapes mirror his inner conflict, prompting reflection on the authenticity we carry within ourselves.
In another venture, “In the Still of the Night,” Rohith served as the director of photography. Crafted by creative partner Emely de Paiva, this intense film earned acclaim at the prestigious Gothamite Monthly Film Awards, captivating audiences with its gripping narrative and compelling visuals.
Moreover, Rohith’s artistic prowess shines in “One Last Sunrise,” a riveting film where he assumed roles as writer and director. The story follows a headhunter, portrayed by Rohith, on a mission to confront a rapist. An unexpected rooftop encounter takes a twist with the arrival of a vengeful figure. Garnering multiple awards, including Best International Short Film, Best Director, Best Editor, Best Cinematography, and Best Producer at the Qatar Independent Film Festival, “One Last Sunrise” continues to make waves on the festival circuit.
