Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 26: Mumbai-based Bharat Semitech Pvt. Ltd., India’s first dedicated semiconductor equipment manufacturer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kaynes Semicon Pvt. Ltd., the Sanand-based outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) operator, to bring more domestically made equipment into Indian chip production lines.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of a semiconductor industry gathering SEMICON India 2026, held from September 17–19 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi that concluded Saturday, but the real story is the partnership itself rather than the event where it was announced.
Under the MoU, Bharat Semitech’s wafer and package inspection systems, metrology tools, and chemical delivery modules will be qualified and deployed within Kaynes Semicon’s Sanand OSAT facility, with both companies also collaborating on equipment servicing, calibration, and technology localisation. Full commercial terms have not yet been disclosed.
The tie-up links two ends of the domestic chip value chain: Bharat Semitech’s equipment manufacturing base in Greater Noida, with a proposed new facility in Sanand built in partnership with Singapore’s Applied Instruments, and Kaynes Semicon’s operational assembly-and-test line, among the first in India to reach commercial production under the India Semiconductor Mission.
“This partnership reflects exactly the kind of ecosystem India needs to build — where domestic equipment makers and domestic OSAT players work together, rather than India’s semiconductor growth depending entirely on imported capital equipment,” said Jayesh Patel, Managing Director of Bharat Semitech.
India’s semiconductor equipment market remains largely import-dependent even as fabrication and packaging capacity grows under the ₹1.275-trillion India Semiconductor Mission 2.0. Officials have repeatedly pointed to domestic equipment manufacturing, rather than fabrication alone, as the area most in need of homegrown players.
While modest in scale for now, the agreement is being read as an early, on-the-ground sign of that equipment ecosystem taking shape — one qualification and deployment cycle at a time — rather than a headline-grabbing mega-deal.
