Close to 150 kilograms of plastic was removed as a result of this initiative
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 27: In commemorating World Environment Health Day, BYJU’S, the world-renowned EdTech company, took a significant step towards environmental conservation by organizing a special beach cleanup event at Akkarai Beach, Chennai, on 20th September 2023.
While this initiative aimed to raise awareness about ecological issues and underscore the critical connection between cleanliness and health, the primary objective was to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution, particularly in our oceans.
BYJU’S partnered with environmental enthusiasts Aravind Tharunsri and his remarkable daughter, Thaaragai Aarathana, to guide participants in understanding the impact of their actions on the environment. Alongside BYJU’S, volunteers, children, and community members joined forces, donning gloves and armed with bags and other necessary equipment, to actively engage in a beach cleanup.
Together, the participants worked tirelessly to collect plastic waste from the beach area, with an ambitious goal of gathering approximately 150 kilograms of plastic during this hour-long activity.
“This beach cleanup event signifies BYJU’S commitment to creating a positive impact on our environment and fostering a sense of responsibility among the younger generation,” said Savitha.S, Academic Centre Head at BTC Chennai ECR, who was one of the enthusiastic volunteers.
BYJU’S has long been dedicated to empowering students with quality education, and this initiative reflects the organization’s broader mission of instilling a sense of environmental stewardship in the youth.
Emphasizing the importance of such initiatives, Aravind Tharunsri, a PADI Master Instructor, disabled diver instructor, EFR instructor trainer, and owner of Temple Adventures, said, “Environmental awareness and conservation are paramount for our planet’s future. Partnering with BYJU’s for this beach cleanup event was a natural fit for us. It is to see young minds actively participating in initiatives like this.”
The Tharunsri father-daughter duo has already made significant contributions to marine conservation by collecting over 1,000 kilograms of plastic waste from our oceans. Aravind Tharunsri, who has dedicated two decades to cleaning the ocean floor, has an astounding record of gathering 30,000 kilograms of plastic waste during his extensive efforts. Their shared mission revolves around educating the next generation about the perils of plastic pollution and advocating for the preservation of marine life.
Athul K, a faculty member at BTC Chennai-ECR said, “Participating in this cleanup event has been an eye-opening experience. It’s heartening to see BYJU’S extend its commitment to education towards environmental conservation.”

The event serves as a reminder that everyone, regardless of age or background, can contribute to the well-being of our planet.
