New Delhi: Dr. Rajeev Menon, National Secretary General of the Republican Party of India( Athawale), has urged the Delhi government to swiftly implement the Transgender Welfare Board. He pointed out that while 12 Indian states, including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, have already established a Transgender Welfare Board, the national capital still lacks one. The formation of such a welfare board is crucial to protect the rights and interests of transgender individuals and provide them with easier access to welfare initiatives. Dr. Menon called on the Delhi government to pay closer attention to the welfare of the transgender community and implement various schemes to recognize and support them.

Dr. Menon emphasized that transgender individuals deserve opportunities for livelihood, educational assistance, and social security. He noted that states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, UP, Bihar, West Bengal, Tripura, and Mizoram have already established such boards, but it is a significant failure on the part of the Delhi government that one has not been formed in the capital yet. He further stated that he plans to file formal complaints with both the central and Delhi governments to ensure that the rights of the transgender community are protected in the national capital.

As per the Transgender Welfare Policy, transgender individuals should be entitled to free gender reassignment surgeries in government hospitals, free housing, access to citizenship documents, full scholarships for higher education in government colleges, and income-generating programs (IGP). Additionally, those seeking dignified employment should receive financial support to start small businesses such as grocery stores, canteens, and sales of clothes, rice, and vegetables. Dr. Menon also highlighted that while the Delhi Social Welfare Department once claimed approval of the constitution of the Transgender Welfare Board, no notifications or actions have been taken for months, leading to further delays in implementation.
