A Celebration of Indian Scripts

New Delhi (India), August 14: As August 16th approaches, the vibrant city of Delhi prepares to witness a remarkable initiative. The synergy between The Calligraphy Foundation and IGNCA culminates in the grand unveiling of Akshar Mahotsav, an event dedicated to Celebrating Indian Scripts.

Scheduled for the 16th and 17th of August 2023, this noteworthy event will unfold within the confines of the Samvet Auditorium and Darshanam Gallery no.2 at IGNCA, situated on Janpath, New Delhi.

The Calligraphy Foundation’s Akshar Mahotsav stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to promoting the elegance of paper, pens, and ink. Marching steadfastly in this direction, the festival champions the exploration of this blossoming visual art form of writing, aptly coinciding with “World Calligraphy Day,” thereby christened Akshar Mahotsav (where ‘Akshar’ translates to ‘letter’ and ‘Mahotsav’ signifies ‘festival’ in English).

The visionary minds behind the concept of Akshar Mahotsav 23 are none other than Abhishek Vardhan Singh and Ekta Chahar. The grand tapestry of scripts that have unfurled across the region over countless millennia stands as a testament to the varied geographies and embodies a tapestry of cultural heritage.

On this momentous occasion, Abhishek Vardhan Singh, the Executive Director, articulated, “Akshar Mahotsav forms an integral facet of our larger project –अक्षरदिखेंगेनहींतोसीखेंगेकैसे (‘If you don’t see the letter, you won’t learn how to read’). Our belief lies in bringing ‘Akshar’ to the forefront, elevating its visibility. This goal is attained when it intersects with other disciplines, and this edition is a dedicated focus on the essence of ‘Akshar Bharat‘.”

Ekta Chahar, the Program Manager(Management and Assurance Lead), elaborated, “In India, World Calligraphy Day is exalted as Akshar Mahotsav. It encompasses the Introduction, Application, and Celebration of Calligraphy. Calligraphers from all corners of India unite in jubilation on this significant day.”

Raghunita Gupta, the Managing Director, underscored the Calligraphy Foundation’s robust community of over 3500 artists across India. This cohesive platform facilitates artistic growth by fostering the exchange of ideas surrounding the vast repository of scripts spanning the subcontinent. The foundation’s multifaceted initiatives, including workshops, virtual sessions, meet-ups, exhibitions, and events, converge harmoniously in pursuit of this shared mission.

Distinguished luminaries poised to grace the event include Dr. Sonal Mansingh (Chief Guest), Dr. Prof. Ramesh Chand Gaur (Guest of Honor), Dr. Prof. Sanjeev Kumar (Special Guest of Honor), Prof. Biman Bihari Das (Guest of Honor), Mr. Aditya Arya (Guest of Honor), Mrs. Ratan Kaul (Guest of Honor), Mr. Kamal Modi (Guest of Honor), and Mr. Roop Chand (Guest of Honor).
