What if the most meaningful truths were felt rather than said? Song of a Butterfly: Journey With a Beautiful, and Autistic Mind is a remarkable book that opens the door to the inner world of a young woman with Autism, who uses the gift of poetry to lift her voice from silence and, in doing so, create a journey of self-discovery, connection and love without conditions. This book is not only about Autism, it is about humanity. Song of a Butterfly offers an intimate view into the life of a young and beautiful mind, and with her exists the steadfast love and courage of her family. It is an exposition of her life, as an honest affirmation of the beauty of small victories and the courage to feel deeply when words do not suffice.
As the beloved song by The Carpenters says:
“Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near…
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you…”
These lyrics, shared in the book’s dedication, echo the essence of Sophia’s world filled with beauty, longing, and quiet brilliance waiting to be heard.
More Than a Memoir—A Song of Hope
Song of a Butterfly is filled with sincerity, feeling, and faith as it is born out of the choice to feel instead of being afraid. It invites the reader to go on a transformative experience exploring the daily rhythms of a family living together, their challenges, celebrations, and unnoticeable surprises. This book is not reserved for families becoming acquainted with the language of neurodiversity, it is for anyone who seeks a deeper expression of what that language evokes, which is a sense of belonging, empathy, love, and a greater awareness of the invisible ties that bind us.
About the Authors – Sophia Kapoor & Anshu Kapoor
Sophia Kapoor is a young adult living with Autism in the Washington DC metro area with her parents and twin sister. Her poetry journey began when she discovered communication through spelling; an awakening that gave her a voice. Sophia enjoys travelling, especially to Italy, where she spent most of her childhood, and brings a rich, heartfelt dimension to her writing. Song of a Butterfly is her first published piece, which is a beautiful introduction that says as much as words can say. Anshu Kapoor, Sophia’s mother has advocated for and cared lovingly for Sophia with patience for several years. Through years of strong belief in Sophia’s ability, Anshu was able to uncover Sophia’s unique method of communication in 2018. Their journey proves what can happen when a parent listens not just with their ears but with their heart. Their contributions are gently intertwined in a collage that creates this eloquent, powerful, poetic tribute to love, identity, and possibility.
