Mayaa SH is a prominent figure in contemporary Indian literature and a vocal advocate for women’s rights. Her work consistently addresses issues of gender equality, empowerment, and social justice, earning her numerous accolades and recognition. Mayaa has collaborated with feminists, environmental justice advocates, and women’s rights leaders at convenings and trainings around the world through her participation.
The philosopher, gender-based violence specialist, women’s activist, and authoress has won the awards for her work on empowerment of women in developing countries, advocacy of the human rights of small farming communities, and scientific analysis of environmental sustainability, a press release said. These awards also highlight the intersection of social justice and environmentalism, which is a critical framework for understanding how various forms of oppression and discrimination are interconnected with environmental degradation. This concept is often referred to as environmental justice or intersectional environmentalism.
Mayaa SH has won the awards for her outstanding ideology and mindset and work around the intersectionality, which is a framework that examines how characteristics such as race, place, age, gender, and geography intersect with each other and interact with power structures to create and reinforce power, privilege, disadvantage, and discrimination. This concept is crucial for understanding people’s unique experiences, risks, and resiliencies in the context of environmental issues. By applying an intersectional lens, we can see how climate change more harshly affects individuals with multiple vulnerable identities, such as poor communities of color or women of color.
“Paryavaran Mitra Ratna Award 2025,” “International Environmental Warrior Award 2025,” and “Paryavaran Mahakumbh Leadership Excellence Award 2025” are annual awards that recognize individuals for their sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment. In words of Mayaa: “To address the intersection of social justice and environmentalism effectively, it’s essential to bring together environmental and social justice groups. Governments should consider how new laws and plans about climate change and sustainability will impact different communities. Grassroots green groups can help link environmentalists and social justice advocates, giving voices to marginalized groups dealing with environmental burdens. The recognition of the intersection between social justice and environmentalism is crucial for creating a more just and sustainable world. By understanding this intersection and applying an intersectional lens to climate action, we can develop more equitable solutions that address the complex needs of diverse communities.”
