In a powerful demonstration of global unity and youth empowerment, Lazarus Union CSLI India, under the distinguished leadership of Commander in Chief Dr. Dinesh Sabnis, led a successful delegation of Indian students from the Ashoka Group of Schools, Nashik, to Vienna from May 26th to June 2nd, 2025. This initiative not only symbolized cultural exchange but also served as a key educational platform aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Championing Global Citizenship through Education
Lazarus Union, a globally recognized NGO holding General Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 2017, is known for its unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts. With civil protection groups active across continents, the organization focuses on supporting the homeless, disabled, and underserved communities worldwide.
In recent years, Lazarus Union has expanded its impact by working on projects closely aligned with the UN Charter and SDGs, partnering with delegations from countries including Austria, Germany, India, Brazil, and Italy. A key pillar of this mission has been youth engagement and education.
Under the inspiring leadership of Dr. Dinesh Sabnis, Lazarus Union CSLI India has been instrumental in rolling out youth-focused programs that introduce young minds to the fundamentals of the United Nations, cultural diplomacy, international relations, and global sustainable development.
A Landmark Educational Delegation in Vienna
This year’s highlight was the immersive tour of Vienna by 20 bright students from the Ashoka Group of Schools. The delegation participated in high-impact sessions designed to foster a deeper understanding of global diplomacy and SDGs. The visit included guided tours of the Austrian Parliament and the United Nations Office in Vienna, where students actively participated in a Symposium on Sustainable Development Goals.
During the Symposium, students presented thoughtful papers on critical topics including SDG-5 (Gender Equality), SDG-8 (Youth Development), SDG-13 (Climate Action), and SDG-16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Their presence was graced and encouraged by Ms. Nidhi Dhiman, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in Vienna, who applauded the students’ efforts and highlighted India’s evolving diplomatic role in both unipolar and bipolar world structures.
Partnerships for Global Impact
In a landmark development during the 15th Anniversary celebrations of Lazarus Union, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Commander in Chief Roberto Ortiz (Brazil), Commander in Chief Antonio Virgili (Italy), and Dr. Dinesh Sabnis (India). The agreement focuses on strengthening collaboration on educational projects, youth development programs, peace initiatives, and the promotion of SDGs.
This multi-nation collaboration is set to pave the way for cross-border knowledge sharing and holistic youth development, encouraging young people to be the catalysts for sustainable change in their communities.
Cultural Exchange and Heritage Promotion
Adding a vibrant cultural touch to the delegation’s visit, students showcased Indian classical dance performances, including Kathak, at various events. These artistic renditions were met with admiration and applause, notably during the special investiture ceremony commemorating the 15th Anniversary of the Lazarus Union. The celebration witnessed participation from international delegations and dignitaries, including H.E. Herta Margarete Habsburg, Princess of Tuscany, who personally interacted with the Indian students, appreciating their talent and cultural pride.
Mentoring sessions at the prestigious Ban Ki-moon Centre and Diplomatic Academy further enriched the experience, providing students with invaluable global perspectives and insights into international policymaking and peace-building.
Looking Ahead: Building a Better Tomorrow
The successful execution of this global educational mission was made possible by the dedicated support of Lazarus Union’s Chief Representative and General Secretary, Mr. Oliver M. Gruber-Lavin, and CFO Comrade Peter Scherer. Their leadership at the Vienna Head Office was instrumental in facilitating a seamless and impactful program.
Looking to the future, Lazarus Union CSLI India aims to intensify its commitment to youth development, educational diplomacy, and sustainability initiatives. Upcoming projects are set to further engage students from across the globe in forums and workshops centered on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, cultural diplomacy, and peacebuilding.
