Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] July 22 : On July 13, 2024, D. M. Harish School of Law (DMHSL), HSNC University, Mumbai had the honour of hosting a Master lecture by Hon’ble Justice GS Patel, Former Judge, Bombay High Court. The lecture, held at the Worli campus, attracted a diverse audience of students, faculty and legal professionals eager to hear from one of the foremost legal minds of the country.
The event was graced by Mr. Anil Harish, President of the HSNC Board Dr. Hemlata K. Bagla, Vice Chancellor of HSNC University; Dr. Bhagwan Balani, Registrar; and Dr. Leena Pujari, Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies. In his opening remarks, Mr. Anil Harish expressed his pleasure in welcoming Justice Patel and announced his new role as a Distinguished Professor of Practice at DMHSL. Mr. Harish highlighted Justice Patel’s plans to introduce innovative teaching methods, underscoring the transformative impact expected from his presence.

Justice Patel’s lecture was a masterful blend of legal theory and practical wisdom, delivered in a TED-talk-style format. He explored fundamental questions about the nature of law and justice, traced the historical development of legal systems and delved into the philosophical underpinnings of legal practice. Justice Patel also addressed the distinctions between civil and criminal law, discussed the ethical dilemmas faced by legal practitioners and stressed the importance of storytelling and empathy in the practice of law.
He underscored the necessity for lawyers to cultivate empathy, advising them to view each case from the perspective of the client. Justice Patel also emphasised the importance of broad reading and effective storytelling in law. He encouraged future litigators to become adept at crafting compelling narratives, noting that strong language skills are essential for effective advocacy. Additionally, he advised that lawyers should refrain from pre-judging cases and remain impartial, a cornerstone of the legal profession.
The lecture concluded with a lively Q&A session, where Justice Patel addressed a range of questions, from media trials and road safety laws to language fluency requirements in legal practice.
